Top 10 Clever Things to Do With Old Sheets

Crawling into a bed with brand-new sheets might be one of the most satisfying feelings in the world (well, at least we believe so.) But what are you supposed to do with the sheets whose retirement is way past due? Hoarding them in your closet isn’t the best solution if you’re trying to keep up with Mari Kondo’s rules or simply want to have more free space. Of course, you can throw them out, but that’s just boring.

So what if we told you can give them another life with a different purpose? Since we love all the things sheets, here are the top ten clever ways to reuse your old sheets and save them from a garbage bin.

Make Reusable Bags

It’s never too late to start thinking about our planet and do your part to contribute to global environmental sustainability. That’s when your old bedsheets can come in handy. Instead of gathering dozens of plastic bags you might never use again, why not create eco-friendly totes from your retired sheets? It can be a shopping bag, laundry bag, toy storage bag, you name it. You can also use your imagination and craft skills to decorate each bag and maybe even give a few to your friends and family. It’s a great way to reuse your sheets and save the world at the same time.

Create Kitchen Towels

It’s time to make paper towels a thing of the past. Old cotton sheets can work perfectly as cleaning towels all around the house. Can you imagine how many little rectangles you can cut out of one sheet and for how long you can reuse them? We guess you might have enough for a year or more. And if you do like crafts, you can embroider some to make unique kitchen towels or mark them according to the stuff you’re going to clean with them. You can even make a DIY apron if you’ve got enough time on your hands.

Protect Your Plants

Just like you, your plants might get cold. Use an old cotton sheet to cover your plant beds on chilly autumn nights. This can protect them from sudden temperature drops and provide enough insulation to keep them warm and healthy.

Make Chew Toys for Your Dog

If you’re a lucky dog owner, you probably know that sometimes your favourite fluffy friend might decide its regular chew toy isn’t that interesting anymore and switch to your clothes instead. So to protect your precious belonging, try turning your old bedsheets into chewing toys for your pup. It’d be a nice addition to its toy collection and something “fresh” to bite on.

Keep One in Your Car

Things happen, and when they do, you’d probably want to be ready. That’s why it’s a good idea to have one of your old bedsheets in the car for emergencies. You can put it under your knees when changing a flat tire, cover a backseat or trunk if you don’t want to make your car dirty, or cover your seat if you got under the rain and don’t want to make your seat too wet.

Create a Party Costume

Of course, using an old bedsheet to make a ghost costume can always be a go-to for a Halloween party for both adults and kids. But why stop on ghosts? There are many other characters you can recreate using bedsheets. It might require a bit more research, imagination, and maybe colourful dyes to do so. However, it can end up being an exciting family project or even a competition to determine who makes a better costume out of the old bedsheets.

Make Matching Pajamas

If you’ve been dreaming about having matching pyjamas with your friend or a family member, it might be just about time to make your dream a reality. If you have old bedsheets with a flattering pattern, you can turn them into a pyjama set or a nightgown with the help of these few easy steps. This can help you save money, add new loungewear to your wardrobe, and simply have fun.

DIY Table Napkins

Your old bedsheets can work great as DIY napkins for your table or a picnic, especially if they have cool and unique patterns. All you need to do is decide on the size, cut out the squares, sew two pieces together, and "voilà!" You might be surprised how fancy these napkins can turn out.

Make Curtains

If you have a pair of high-quality, thick bedsheets that aren’t too worn out yet and you’d like to give them another chance, you might want to consider turning them into no-sew curtains. We’d recommend using all-white or striped sheets for this project. But hey, you can use whatever sheet your heart desires.

Consider Donating Them

If you’re not a DIY type of person or your life is simply too busy for these kinds of projects, bringing your old bedsheets to the local donation centre is much better than throwing them out. Of course, you’d need to make sure the sheets are still in good condition and clean before you donate them. But, we’re sure it can help someone in need make their home a cosier and better place to live in. Plus, you can do it with the rest of the clothes and things you don’t intend on using anymore as it might make someone’s life easier and put a smile on their face.
